First day at my new job!

Today was my first day of work at Google. Most of the day was spent in orientation, however there are two interesting things to report: 1) The monitor on my desk is 30 inches. 2) My co-worker, sitting less than 10 feet away is the legendary Andy Hertzfeld.

    30-inch monitor… 2560 pixels horizontally, I’m guessing…

Be careful of the cafeterias. They have too much good food.

Can you say what you’re doing?

Can you say what annotations, if any, accompany my resume in their system :-)?

  2. Robert McNally Says:

Heh. They have 30″ monitors where I work, too. 😛

Still brilliant after all these years, I see.

(Any idea why the first time I submitted this it never showed up in your comments section?)

A lot of comment spam has been getting through the automatic filters lately, and I’ve had to delete it manually. Perhaps I deleted you comment by mistake?

  5. talan Says:

    Possibly.

Tell me, what inspired the name, “Talin”?

  6. Robert McNally Says:

Regarding comment spam, if you’re using WordPress you should definitely have Akismet turned on. On my blog, I also installed a simple captcha plug-in that took care of the few that slipped through.

I’ve been using Akismet for many months and it has worked wonderfully, however in the last few weeks some spam has been getting through anyway. Apparently the spammers have adjusted their tactics.

I just can’t visualize the mind set of people who would be willing to destroy the internet – just as usenet was destroyed by spam – for an insignificant temporary advantage. Nor can I imagine the kind of people who would actually click on such ads.

  8. Robert McNally Says:

Yes, installing the captcha was in response to an increase in spam slipping by Akismet. It seems to have quelled the problem for now.

You didn’t answer my question: Where did you come up with the name, “Talin.” Wasn’t it while you were in the USAF?

  10. Talin Says:

I didn’t answer cause it’s not all that interesting of a story to tell. It was during the early 80s – after the Air Force – and started out as a “fan name” for SF conventions. And then I started using it on BIX (Byte Information Exchange), and it just kind of snowballed from there.

I could have sworn I first heard you utter that name in the barracks…

  12. Talin Says:

I’m trying to figure out which one of about six people you could be. Care to give me a hint?

  13. talan Says:

You introduced me to Heinlein. Does that help?

  14. Talin Says:

    Um, no – not really.

To be perfectly honest, this whole “This is your life – mystery guest” thing is freaking me out just a little bit.

  15. talan Says:

    Understood, David, just playing around.

Tom Chafin, althouth I haven’t used the name “Tom” in about 20 years. It’s T Alan or Alan these days.

You owned the TV, I owned the VCR. I think that will be adequate proof of Identification.

  16. Talin Says:

    Ah cool 🙂

I was wondering whether it was you, Arlen Walker, Ed Langer, Paul or Nick or someone like that 🙂
